Throughout American history, xenophobia - the fear of the foreign - has led to prejudice and discrimination against people from unfamiliar cultures. This can have devastating consequences, such as the mass incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

Follow the story of Mary Oyama, a Japanese-American woman incarcerated at Heart Mountain who reached out to the people of Powell through her newspaper column, Heart Mountain Breezes, and explore the importance of learning about other cultures in order to counteract xenophobia.

Our guest speaker is Sybil Tubbs, Education Manager for the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation. This event, which is part of the 2024 Global Studies Seminar and sponsored by the International Foreign Language Program at the US Department of Education, is free and open to the public.
