A.L. Mickelson Field Station High Course

Course Description

The High Challenge Course is a set of elements high off the ground, or that involve the participant(s) climbing through an obstacle.  Traditionally, the high course is designed to challenge the individual and help push them passed personal and self imposed boundaries.  While the course can continue the team effort, more emphasis is placed on the individual in their attempts to overcome their personal fears and barriers.  The course is designed to challenge the participant both physically and mentally as well as take risks and push themselves outside of their comfort zones in a controlled and safe enviroment.  Participants are belayed by group members as they progress through the course in order to keep them safe, allowing them to challenge themselves in a way they may not otherwise be able to.

The course at the A.L. Mickelson Field Station is different from the campus course because once the participants are involved the course, they are there until they finish the course.  This is a Static Course.  The participants are belayed with a set of Lobster Claws that they transfer from one element to the next.  DELTA has Facilitators stationed on platforms to make sure the participants are transffering correctly, but it gives the participant more control and a greater sense of accomplishment as they are in charge of completing the course and their personal safety.  The participants are never left without supervision to ensure their safety, but they are able to take more responsibility, and therefore growth, from the course.

The course includes the following elements:

  • Telephone Pole Staple Climb
  • Postman's Walk
  • Multi-Vine
  • Tired Two Wire
  • Heebie Jeebie
  • Rope Bridge
  • Islands in the Sky
  • Zip-Line (used to exit the course as the final element, approx. 200 feet long)
